for american progress doing the introduction for president obama who will talk about income inequality in this country and draw a correlation to how getting the aca up and running can help draw and close that gap. joining me right now is white house -- nbc white house correspondent peter alexander to talk more about what we expect to hear from the president. peter, the rollout from the white house has been that we expect the president and those that have been tasked with talking about the aca to highlight things each day this month. so how much is this speech really going to be focused on wa obama care. >> well, each day leading up to that december 23rd deadline will focus on the affordable care act. there's a youth event where the president will speak more specifically to health care but this white house will make it clear that health care security is tied into economic security. this is in ways going to preview the state of the union, one of the central themes for the president, which is the desire to create access for all in terms of opportunity to provide his vision for economic se

's cardinal dolan on "meet the press" saying we don't like obama care anymore. >> the more the pope talks, the more the cardinals will understand it's god's will. unfortunately clergy people have to be concerned with their congregation. if we have the pope, we wouldn't have cuts in food stamps, we would have immigration, we would have health care, kids would be educated, we wouldn't have two million people locked up in jail and we wouldn't have drones destroying the lives of people that we don't know. god bless the pope. and i'm glad the cardinal hears him. i wish other religions would hear them, because there's a vacuum in congress. capitalism is the best thing in the world, but it's not set up to take care of the poor. >> congressman charlie rangel, great to have you here. i think you can easily invest in green ba nananabananas. thanks for your time. >>> joining me now, editor of the "washington post" wonkblog, ezra klein. good to see you, buddy. it was a big weekend for the administration. now they're touting these big gains, coming out with nbc news being able to verify these numbers.

. >>> conspiracy theorists, it's time for the poli side bar. president obama made a little history at last night's kennedy center honors. he became the first president to talk about area 51, at least in public. >> when you first become president, one of the questions that people ask you is what's really going on in area 51? when i wanted to know, i called shirley maclaine. i think i just became the first president to ever publicly mention area 51. >> kentucky senator rand paul admitting yesterday that there's at least one person who doesn't want him to run for president, and that person would be his wife. >> i am seriously thinking about it, but i'm also very serious about the family considerations and, you know, just look at what happens daily to any politician in america. you talk about how uncivil things are. >> all right, it's not a joke actually. what did president obama, kathleen sebelius and senator ted cruz have in common? they're all on the short list as the top ten name for "time's" person of the year. the winner will be unveiled on wednesday, and i think the pope's gonna get it. waiti

the press" talking about the legacy and the lessons of nelson mandela. charles ogletree is in boston with us this morning. professor, the modern influence that he has had. you think about president obama who meets him, and we have the pictures of it back in 2005. he's still a senator, and mandela had been encouraged to meet with this rising star in the democratic party, and this was their only meeting at the four seasons hotel in washington, the president reflecting on the life and times of mandela from the white house on thursday. >> i'm one of the countless millions who drew inspiration from nelson mandela's life. my very first political action, the first thing i ever did that involved an issue or a policy or politics was a protest against apartheid. >> and it's interesting, he being too young for the civil rights era, reverend jackson, but first to charles ogletree, this was the connection point was apartheid. this was the inspiration nelson mandela, who he could experience realtime, the joy of that deliverance realtime. >> that's exactly right. i was a student at stanford when i heard th

were very similar. president obama just came off a brutal fight with republicans over the debt ceiling. he faced reelection in the year and he was doing something to jack up his own approval and to also talk about what his presidency was about and to put some firmness behind that. he's doing that again and he's had a rough six weeks over the obama care website. he's trying to reframe this debate as they head into the midterm elections to be broader than just obama care, democrats realize that if this is about obama care in the mid-term elections it's not a good issue for them and even though we see positive things going on, they want things to be about more than that. for some, this is a signal about getting his mojo back. >> the president's economic policies improve government reliance rather than economic mobility and rather than tackling income inequality by lifting people up, he's been fixated on taxing some down. >> why do you think republicans seem so fixated on the government reliance narrative and this tax and spend. this tax and spend phrase that they of the to use over and ov

to put the immigrants first and stop putting political posture first because guess what, barack obama, two million deportations. the republicans on the other hand will not move. but here i see light. you talked about walden. a couple of weeks ago they said everything is dead, the speaker said nothing is going. the speaker cleared that up and said we are moving forward. i can only tell you now, thomas, that there are still conversations going on, important conversations going on between republicans and democrats. and i want to thank, i want to thank the fasters. i want to thank them for putting this moral thing on this issue. the fasters are there, the dreamers are following the speaker around because everybody is raising their voice. no one is going to get -- and the last thing is, look, they're all going to become citizens. 11 million, they're here, they're not going anywhere. the question is how do we get them there. >> sir, thank you so much. i also want to note in your home state of illinois immigrants can begin applying for driver's licenses today. >>> up next, the deadly train d

whose name comes up whenever politicos talk about the budget, or for that matter, about hillary in 2016. it's his beth warren, the one time-time obama nominee set off a huge policy debate among democrats when she went to the senate floor last month and said it's time to stop playing defense on social security. >> if we do nothing, social security will be safe for the next 20 years, and even after that, we'll continue to pay most benefits. with some modest adjustments, we can keep the system solvent for many more years, and we could even increase benefits. >> a little bit after speech, a washington group of self-described centrists attacked warren. warning democrats not to, quote, follow senator warren over a, quote, populist inclusive. that set off a policy firestorm. thirdway struggled to hold on to its allies and honorary co chair in the democratic caucus took warren's side. new york's joe crowley said he strongly disagrees. allison schwartz called it outrageous. in an interview released today with mother jones, senator warren says that thirdway actually is framing the debate over soc
